Problem: How can we enhance current research/thesis projects?
Summary
In this advanced science collaboration, Biology II students at LHS partnered with faculty and science majors from William Jewell College to engage in real-world research. Facilitated through the district’s networking colleague, the project provided high school students with the opportunity to work directly with college students on their thesis projects.
LHS students received training on advanced laboratory equipment, conducted research to better understand the subject matter, and participated in scientific discussions with college researchers. Their primary role was to provide meaningful feedback and pose thoughtful questions aimed at enhancing the quality and direction of the ongoing thesis work. This project allowed high school students to experience the rigor of college-level science and develop critical thinking, communication, and laboratory skills through authentic academic collaboration.
Takeaways
Students (1) gained insight into the criteria of being a science major, (2) gained insight through research and feedback on current science research projects, and (3) gained skills on using laboratory equipment and working with adults on projects.
Advice
Communication cannot be overdone.
