School: Platte County High School
Class: Applied Communication (ELA 4)
Instructor: Gail Martin
Client: Mama Doe’s Ice Cream Food Truck
Problem: How can we help a local food truck business grow its brand and reach new customers through innovative marketing and expansion strategies?
Summary
Students collaborated with Sara, owner of Mama Doe’s Ice Cream Food Truck, to solve real-world business challenges in a client-connected project. After learning firsthand about how to start and run a food truck business, students were tasked with developing ideas to support the business in three focus areas: merchandise, promotions, and identifying additional locations. Through research, collaboration, and problem-solving, students gained confidence and practical business experience. They presented their ideas to the client via Google Slides in a virtual meeting. Sara plans to continue working with students and consider their ideas for future implementation.
Takeaways
For the next session, I would have my client do a Google Meet with each group halfway through the project. I think this would provide them with more feedback and make sure they are working in the right direction.
Advice
Take a chance with this. Don’t be afraid to take a risk and just get started. It’s also important to just let the groups succeed or fail together. It’s hard not to intervene, but it’s necessary for them to problem-solve within their group.
