School: Olathe South High School
Class: Fashion and Interior Design Studio
Instructor: Madison Brown
Client: Olathe South High School
Problem: The current spaces (teacher’s lounge and SPED conference room), lack an inviting atmosphere that welcomes both outside visitors as well as tired teachers. Students were challenged to redesign to make the room more welcoming and relaxing and to fill the needs of the end user.
Summary of Project
Students met with Dr. DeMaree, the building principal, to discuss the needs and wants of the Special Education conference space as well as the teacher’s lounge. They worked together to devise an on-budget plan that would transform both spaces appropriately using their design knowledge.
Key Takeaways or Advice
The biggest struggle was finding large enough projects that would require the student to expand outside of the classroom. We were lucky enough to have a building principal who was on board to be the client, but he is also a principal and very busy at the end of the day. Students learned how to pivot and reevaluate during the process.
