School: Raymore-Peculiar High School

Class: Special Education—Transition

Instructor: Johnathan Benson

Client: Ray-Pec Concession Stand

Problem: How can students redesign the current concession stand at school to make it more efficient and better meet the needs of the community?

Summary

In this project, a small group of transition students worked to redesign the school’s lunchtime concession stand operated by functional skills students, with the goal of improving its efficiency and better aligning it with their needs. Despite facing challenges, including absences and group member changes, the remaining students demonstrated resilience and leadership. They collaborated to create a comprehensive final proposal that included a thoughtful design plan and estimated costs for implementation.

Takeaways

Better communication between the teacher and the client to work in more face time would have been beneficial. More upfront planning of deadlines and meetings to keep the students progressing towards a more solid deadline.

Advice

You will learn a lot as you go. The students will open your eyes to things you haven’t thought about, and you should listen and adjust. It will go a lot differently than you envisioned, so be flexible enough to go through it and adjust on the fly. They will still reach the goals they’ve set for themselves; it just might not be in the way that you thought they would.
