School: Piper Middle School

Class: 7th Grade Life Science

Instructor: Jim Newland

Client: Wyandotte County Health Dept., Wyandotte County District Attorney’s Office, Kansas City Kansas Police Department, Kansas City Kansas Fire Department, Wyandotte County Election Office

Problem:

  • Kansas City Kansas Fire Department: How might we keep our firefighters healthy, both mentally and physically, so that they can optimally serve the community?
  • Wyandotte County Election Office: How might the election office increase student engagement and participation in the election process?
  • Kansas City Kansas Police Department: How might we get people to follow/obey traffic laws? How might we encourage positive relationships with police officers? How might we increase positive behaviors among people so they don’t hurt each other?
  • Wyandotte County Health Department: How might we advertise to or engage with teens across Wyandotte County to let them know about Health Department Teen Health Services?
  • Wyandotte County District Attorney’s Office: How Might We better communicate with victims of crime?

“The 6th Grade Academy Prep students from Piper Middle participated in their first Client-Connected Project (CCP) aligned with their investigation of the Piper High School Public Service Academy. This CCP provided learners the opportunity to analyze and solve authentic problems with professionals from the industry.”

A struggle was the scheduling process of the CCP and getting the clients to meet with groups at least twice throughout the process. A success was the students actually learned a lot about this industry and enjoyed the project.
