School: Fort Connect/Fort Osage High School
Class: CCP Time
Instructor: Katie Don Carlos
Client: Westind Inclusion Center
Problem: How can we create a workspace for the Westind Inclusion Center?
Summary of Project
Students met with people from the Westind Inclusion Center to find out their needs. Westind needed them to design a workspace out of an empty room. The students worked with cabinet makers and did research to determine what they wanted to design, test, and build for the Inclusion Center. Students were able to follow through and actually build and install the cabinets.
Key Takeaways or Advice
I really think that using the design thinking model was a great way to lead students through the process of completing the project.
Deadlines for building things as intricate as cabinets need to be very flexible or at least not optimistic.
Students need a required amount of communication with clients- Like weekly contact.

Learning Standards
Woodworking standards:
- Measure and add fractions to the nearest 1/8th
- Create plans of Procedure/Working Drawings
- Power Tool Use and Safety.
English standards:
- Conduct short as well as more sustained research projects to answer a question (including a self-generated question) or solve a problem
- Demonstrate command of the conventions of standard English grammar and usage when writing or speaking
- Work with peers to promote civil, democratic discussions and decision-making, set clear goals and deadlines, and establish individual roles as needed
- Design thinking standards which are just using the steps of the design thinking process.
