School: Shawnee Mission South High School
Class: Intro to Engineering
Instructor: Julie Conrad
Client: Rosehill Elementary First Grader’s
Problem: How can we use design and technology to create a personalized product that makes a younger student feel seen, valued, and excited about school?
Summary
In this project, students designed and 3D printed personalized backpack tags for first graders at Rosehill Elementary School, who served as their clients. Each tag was based on the individual likes and dislikes of the first graders, making each product unique and meaningful. To guide their design process, students consulted with engineering teachers and elementary educators, gaining insight into both technical design and age-appropriate personalization. The project culminated in the delivery of the custom tags to the first-grade students, blending creativity, empathy, and real-world design experience.
Takeaways
This project was a success because it motivated all students to make something for their client. Finding experts willing to work with entry-level engineering students was a barrier.
Advice
Choose a project you are already doing/thinking about doing and adjust it to meet the requirements of CCP.
