Problem: How might we transform everyday spaces into platforms for student voice and creative expression?
Summary
Inspired by a personal high school art competition experience, this project aimed to create a welcoming and empowering environment where students could share their stories through visual art. Partnering with The Media Center at North Kansas City High School, students translated their personal narratives into creative works that were displayed on shelving throughout the space, centered around a unifying annual theme. Through this process, students developed skills in visual storytelling, creative expression, and empathy-building. The project also introduced them to using nontraditional, community-centered spaces for artistic and personal expression.
Takeaways
There were some roadblocks along the way, but most of my issues were having students execute the project. To go from the idea phase to the creation phase, but once they saw each other starting to work and their idea coming to life, the energy was magnetic.
Advice
I would tell a new teacher to just be open to new ideas and into having to let go of control of your own curriculum and let students take the reins.
