Project Attributes

School: Blue Springs High School

Class: Horticulture

Instructor: Morgan Payton

Client: Mr. Tom Alderman, BSHS Principle

Problem: How can we design a school garden that meets the needs of our campus community while incorporating sustainable practices and thoughtful planning?

Summary

In this project, horticulture students collaborated with Mr. Tom Alderman, the principal of BSHS, to design a school garden that would enhance the campus environment. Students worked closely with Mr. Alderman to select the optimal location for the garden, decide on preferred building materials, and choose appropriate plants. They developed and presented four distinct raised garden plans, showcasing their research, creativity, and practical design skills. This project provided students with real-world experience in planning and designing a functional and aesthetic school garden.

Takeaways

Lack of time was a huge barrier, since the class is only one semester. A better laid-out calendar for the class to have a timeline to use would be beneficial in the future.
