School: Shawnee Mission Northwest High School
Class: IB History of the Americas
Instructor: Lauren McMaster
Client: Art classes and Mural Club at SMNW
Problem: How can we use public art in schools to authentically represent the diverse stories and identities that shape our local community?
Summary
When a new school mural project was proposed, students were given the opportunity to shape the historical narrative behind the artwork. Instead of relying on outside sources, the class collaborated with the principal, Dr. Lisa Gruman, as well as the art department and mural club, to design historically accurate and culturally representative content. Students developed theme proposals, researched local history, and ensured inclusivity by consulting Dr. Alex Red Corn (KU) and the SMNW Plus Club. Their selected theme, “Celebrate KC,” guided panel designs meant to reflect the diversity, culture, and resilience of the Kansas City community. While implementation was postponed, the mural is set to begin next school year.
Takeaways
Students learned to be flexible due to having to negotiate with the schedules and needs of all stakeholders. They also learned that when dealing with the general public, you have to be very careful to have your information correct and appealing at the same time. They also had a lot of Kansas history to go through and had to problem-solve what should be emphasized and what to leave on the cutting room floor.
Advice
Show yourself some grace and be flexible!!
