Problem: What factors contribute to the poor condition of a school retention pond, and how can we use scientific analysis to develop sustainable solutions for its improvement?

Summary

In this CCP, students partnered with the school district to investigate and improve the condition of a large retention pond located in front of Turner High School. The project focused on identifying the causes of the pond’s visible degradation and determining what could be done to maintain its appearance and health year-round.

Students conducted multiple water quality tests across different seasons—spring, fall, and winter—to analyze the chemical composition of the added water and detect potential contaminants or imbalances. Using their findings, they evaluated possible solutions and environmental management strategies. The final product was a detailed report outlining their data analysis, conclusions, and specific recommendations to help the district take action in restoring and preserving the pond’s visual and ecological quality.

Takeaways

Students communicated with people outside of their peer group. We met with various administrators to discuss the scope and findings. They learned to respond and be flexible with all parties when things did not go as planned.
